So yeah, I forgot I haven't posted about this on LJ (and just a very short blurb about it on FB).
So, I'm still not sure what kind of feels I'm exactly feeling about the whole situation with Koki. I think I've run the gamut of shocked, sad, depressed, angry, angsty...nothing good. Thankfully I have a Chankapaana (Hyphen on the side) friend in
effi_g who has managed to at least talk me into not rage-quitting the fandom. Because OH have I been tempted.
Thing is, over the KAT-TUN hiatus (which we're not finding out the reason for), I've rediscovered my love of Backstreet Boys. For many, MANY reasons, they are SO much better for me to follow than any Japanese group. I COULD leave for greener pastures, and in a way I have, they're my new favorites now, but I won't abandon KAT-TUN...
The fact remains that for 3 years, KAT-TUN has been my ichiban group, when there weren't any other boybands I could really get into, that has to count for something I suppose. Plus, as much as they apparently don't give a damn about each other outside of work, at least they got along while they were working together...well, once Jin wasn't a factor anymore. I think they genuinely cared about each other up to a point. They also make some really catchy songs...and really, when it comes down to it, that's the MAIN reason to really follow any music artist. Then there's Koki...really, anything Koki did, I just kept thinking "If he had been in the US, no one would have gave a fuck"...because really, what he did is kiddy stuff compared to what we hear about celebrities over here getting into. Hell, it was tame considering what two of the Backstreet Boys had gotten themselves into (and subsequently out of because the other members are amazing and looked out for each other). But of course, this is Japan, and JE is stupidly overbearing and controlling, and plays favorites to boot...so yeah, while the more popular acts can practically get away with damn-near anything with a slap on the wrist, Koki gets fired. I think I'm fed up with the company more than anything, honestly. If it wasn't for the fact that boycotting JE would hurt KAT-TUN, I totally would. There's also the issue of also following NEWS, so either way, JE still gets my money *sighs* So yeah, it's the necessary evil I have to put up with in order to enjoy any Japanese group. Pisses me off...
Anyways, if KAT-TUN wants to keep their top spot as far as my favorite Japanese artist is concerned, they'll have to work for it. If they can't keep up...well...that'll be it. Although, if they can at least keep on par with what NEWS puts out, they're good. I just hope they still give me some of the rock stuff they're known for, and don't completely lose their signature "KAT-TUN feel". Although, it'll be really damn hard without Koki's signature raps. Don't even get me started on "REAL FACE" either...
Blah, this ended up being a big incoherent mess...
In a nutshell - While KAT-TUN is no longer my ichiban, I haven't sworn them off, and I'm still gonna give the new 4-nin format a shot. I'll also keep an eye on Koki, but I have a feeling whatever it is he ends up doing will be outside my tastes. I wish him luck though, and I hope he gives JE a proverbial "Fuck You" in the process. Backstreet Boys (and NEWS to a degree) will keep me occupied in the meantime.
